Garbage Disposal Care

Do not put the follow items in a garbage disposal.

Potatoes – The starch from potato peels will lodge inside your drain and cause drain issues.

Grease or Oil – Pouring hot grease down the drain can solidify inside your pipes and also cause foul odors.

Egg Shells – Egg shells are not broken down inside of septic systems.

Pits or seeds- Do not put anything hard down your garbage disposal. It can damage the blades.

Pasta or rice – These foods can expand inside your pipes and cause draining issues.

Fibrous fruits and vegetables – These items can become twisted around the cutting blades and jam the disposal.

Bones –  These do not sharpen the blades, it actually dulls the blade.

Anything in large quantities – A garbage disposal should not be used for emptying the contents of your refrigerator.

Trash– Cigarette butts, paper, plastic, etc.

Bleach or drain cleaner– These chemicals can break down the seals in the disposal and cause leaks.

 

Foul smelling odor coming from your disposal here are a few tips for cleaning

Grinding ice and salt in your garbage disposal is a quick and easy way to remove the residue and particles stuck to the walls, and grinding blades.

Sprinkle half a cup of baking soda into the drain, then gently pour a cup of white vinegar on top. The mixture will fizzle and bubble. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes, then rinse it down with very hot or boiling water, with the garbage disposal running.
